Tom and I were talking about how Obama is doing exactly what he said he would during the campaign - reach out to everybody, even the people with whom he disagrees.

My favorite quote:

"Change will not come if we wait for some other person or if we wait for some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek." - Barack Obama

Tom and I went down to San Antonio with the boys for our first Thanksgiving in 1991. Mom made a point of encouraging us to go downtown to watch the River Parade. The kids were fascinated with the floats.

I would love to take Jacob down to see the parade - he would love it.

Ah yes, I remember the prosperity gospel from Hill Country Church when I was in college. We called it "name it. claim it" although I suppose "blab it, grab it" would be accurate also.

I notice that many fundamentalists tend to pick and choose from the Old Testament to support whatever agenda they are pushing at the moment. I noticed in the transcript, for instance, that Osteen said " I see that a marriage is between a male and a female." I see that Osteen is ignoring Abraham, Jacob, David, Solomon and probably several others that don't come to mind at the moment. It seems to me that in several places in the OT marriage was between one man and lots of women, with some concubines for when he had the spare time.

A bit disingenuous I would say. They want to push their prejudices off on God and blame Him/Her/It.

By the way, do they realize that praying over cars is a form of sympathetic magic? :-)

I was 9 years old at the time. They made an announcement over the intercom at school. As I recall, Mom was listening to the radio while she was cleaning the oven as part of the move from company grade to field grade officer housing.

I was still too young to really process what had happened and what it meant. I remember that the funeral was on all three television channels we got up at Minot (or was it only two? 45 years is a long time). Apparently the riderless horse with the boots backwards in the stirrups impressed me. That's the most vivid memory I have, watching that horse on the television as it followed the caisson with the casket.

A definitive source:
http://www.glbtq.com/social-sciences/elected_officials.html

Worth noting that Allan Spear, elected in 1972 to the Minnesota State Legislature, came out in 1974. Spear was President of the State Senate. He served until his 2000 retirement and passed away October 11, 2008.

His obituary from the Star-Tribune indicates that he was a great leader and a remarkable man:
