Bayou Vista Is Flooding

September 11, 2008

The skies are clear, the storm is far out to sea, yet the effects are starting to appear.  Bayou Vista, the first mainland community as one comes north from Galveston, is flooding.  This low-lying area is normally where a storm surge would hit first.

A TV helicopter over the town shows flooded roads and yards and water rising under those houses on stilts.  Normally — if there is a normal — this would be happening much closer to landfall.  Maybe it’s a high tide.

We’re awaiting a 4 p.m. update for the storm track.  They’ve been showing the likely scenarios of flooding in Galveston coming in from the bay, even if the Seawall is not overtopped.  Our old street will be flooded, and our old house.

We’re waiting and watching.

I really liked your old house, but I am very glad that you aren’t there anymore.
